Joe Reed, as the tale goes, was the product of an unintentional breeding between a racing mare, Della Moore, whos own dam is questionable, (AQHA lists her dam as La Hernadez, yet research writers make out the dam to be Belle, by Sam Rocket) and Joe Blair, a TB who was known for his speed over short distances, not the typical longer TB races.

Foaled in 1938, Joe Reed was described as a 14.2hand, 1000 lb animal with 4 white socks and blaze. He passed on his speed to his get.
