One of the highlights of the 2004 NRHA Derby, scheduled for May 17-23 at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma will undoubtedly be the NRHA Derby Spotlight Sale. Traditionally, this Sale offers a select group of yearlings, two-year-olds, broodmares, and show horses representing the finest pedigrees in the performance horse industry.

The 2003 Spotlight Sale had gross sales that totaled $452,300, with a sale average of $9,627. The High-Seller was Inwhizable, a son of NRHA Hall of Famer and Two Million Dollar Sire Topsail Whiz. He brought $95,000 and was purchased by Scott and Kathy McCutcheon.

There were ten broodmares representing such NRHA superstars as Two Million Dollar Sire Smart Chic Olena, who was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in February at the NRHA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Several broodmares were in foal to NRHA luminaries such as multiple NRHA World Champion Nu Chex To Cash and NRHA Futurity Champion Mr Melody Jac.

In 2003, buyers purchased two-year-olds by such well-known stallions as Three Million Dollar Sire Hollywood Dun, Million Dollar Sire Shining Spark, Gallo Del Cielo, Lil Ruf Peppy, and Steady Tradition. Look for some Spotlight Sale graduates to make their presence known at the 2004 NRHA Futurity.

The 2004 NRHA Derby Spotlight Sale will once again present a select group of horses for the serious performance horse enthusiast. Consignments are due in the NRHA office March 15, 2004. The NRHA Open Derby includes the $80,000 added Open, $15,000 added Intermediate Open, $5,000 added Limited Open, and the new Open Prime Time divisions. The Non Pro Derby offers the $15,000 added Non Pro, $7,500 added Intermediate Non Pro, $5,000 added Limited Non Pro, and $5,000 added Non Pro Prime Time divisions. The NRHA Derby is the showcase for four-, five-, and six-year-old reining horses and, of course, there will be a full slate of NRHA ancillary classes and all the fun and excitement that goes with an NRHA “major event.” And don’t forget the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship, the FEI/USEF Open Reining Championship and the USEF Young Riders Reining Medal Championship.
